Learning to Ballroom Dance

Learning to ballroom dance for me has rekindled my life long live affair with dancing. For many, learning to ballroom dance often culminates with the excitement of a performance or competition. I love the way that learning to ballroom dance makes people deal with issues deeper that just being a klutz and ends up helping them in the long run. Learning to ballroom dance is fun and should not be a painful chore. The art of learning to ballroom dance can really be as easy as walking if you are willing to put the time and effort into learning the different ballroom styles of dance.

Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing is as popular as ever, with the many television shows and movies that feature dancing. Besides the valuable social benefits of dancing, your participation in a regular program of ballroom dancing will produce significant mental and physical health benefits. Ballroom dancing also goes deeper than just dancing. Because it includes so many different dances and styles it is difficult to link ballroom dance to a single history. There’s no doubt, combining grace, rhythm, timing and co-ordination, whilst making it look effortless is probably the most difficult lesson for any would-be ballroom dancer to learn. Ballroom dancing, which includes Latin or rhythm dances like Samba and Rumba, and Standard or smooth dances like Waltz and Tango, has strict rules (as anyone who watched Joey and Mario compete on Dancing with the Stars knows), and no talking.

Dancing for Fun

Dancing is fun, its great exercise and it’s better than sitting around watching TV. As any of you who have taken a group lesson from a good dance instructor, dancing is about feeling. You must learn from the basics up and there are no shortcuts to advance social dancing. Dancing is invigorating and fun and even more so with greater confidence. You should also try to dance with as many different partners as possible to enhance your dancing and practice your leading.

Taking Lessons

In my opinion, private lessons are the best way to learn to ballroom dance. This is one of the reasons that small groups or private lessons are important because the instructor can work more closely with each individual. Private lessons are more expensive but they also provide individualized attention that can greatly speed up the learning process. On the other hand, group lessons are inexpensive and are a good way to try out a variety of dances and meet new friends. Since group lessons tend to focus on steps and patterns rather than on technique, it is especially recommended that male students take a private lesson every few weeks and use that time to study the technique of movement involved, including how to effectively lead his partner through the figures taught in the group classes.

Learning to ballroom dance is a lot of fun. You can become athletically fit and have fun with romance by learning to ballroom dance. Learning to ballroom dance can add entertainment to your life, enhance your leisure time, and improve your quality of life. How about stepping out and learning to ballroom dance.

The Health Benefits Of Dancing

The Health Benefits Of Dancing

Dancing is great aerobic workout that is not only fun, but also provides a great number of astounding health benefits. Dancing is an aerobic exercise consisting of different unique steps, that are choreographed to music. Depending upon the type of dancing, whether it is the waltz or the samba, the charleston or the merengue, will determine the type of steps taken to correctly complete the dance.

Throughout history, dancing has been a way for people to interact without words to satisfy their recreational and social needs. Dancing is very much like a mating dance. Most dances are about the seduction that takes place between lovers. However, dancing is now not only an important social activity but also a competitive sport, and with the popularity of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” competitive dancing has reached all new heights.

While dancing is great fun, there are many health benefits derived from dancing, including improvement in your overall health, a reduction in stress, enhanced energy, easier digestion, weight loss, conditioning of the heart as well as lungs, improved cardiopulmonary functions and enhanced muscle tone and bone density.

It has also been revealed that dancing can reduce the chances for developing such ailments as Alzheimer’s disease as well as other types of dementia that are commonly found in elderly people.

Studies even reveal that dancing regularly reduces the risk of developing disorders such as carcinoma of the large intestine, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart-related ailments. Besides these health benefits, dancing allows you to remain slim and young. It is also a great way to get rid of worries as a result of a hectic work schedule and other personal tensions.

There are many different dance forms that offer terrific benefits to your health. However, each dance form possesses different characteristics. Benefits derived from each of these dance forms are also different, and mostly depend upon the duration of the dance, apart from your level of skill.

For instance, belly dancing is an important dance form that finds a prominent position during celebrations and festivals. The benefits of this dance form are the prevention of lower back problems, stress reduction, and enhanced posture. Not to mention an amazing stomach. Many women belly dance to improve the firmness of their stomach.

Likewise, ballroom dancing, sometimes known as social dancing, renders such advantages as body conditioning, increased stamina, improvement to the circulatory system, and enhanced flexibility. Not to mention that you get to wear those beautiful gowns. Ballroom dancing is considered to be the most elegant form of dance. It requires procision and grace, as well as perfect timing.

Salsa, or the “forbidden dance” which offers benefits including endurance building, weight loss, the release of toxins through sweating, enhanced cholesterol levels, maintenance of high blood pressure, and a reduced heart rate. Salsa, with it’s closer than close dance steps is the basis for “dirty dancing” and we all know how sexual that is.

Swing Dancing, popular in the 20s, 30s and 40s as a response to big band swing music, combines triple steps and steps with syncopated music inspired by the African American and West African cultures music and dance. It is a high paced dance form with lots of energy, and its popularity has not dwindled over the years. Swing dancing is probably one of the most popular forms of dance.

There is also square dancing, a very popular form of dance in the South, conditions the cardiovascular system, enhances cholesterol levels, strengthens the bones, and conditions the muscles.

Other important dance forms that offer different health benefits are jazz dance that combine diverse steps; Flamenco dancing, an essential part of Spanish culture; tap, an important rhythmic as well as recreational dance form; modern dance of distinctive styles; folk dance, an important segment of most festivals and celebrations; Chinese dance consisting of classical as well as ethnic steps; ballet, which builds incredible stamina and balance.

Above all, dancing is considered a great way to burn calories. However, the amount of calories depends upon the type of dance. For example, swing dancing burns almost 235 calories per hour. Likewise, ballroom dancing burns nearly 265. In the case of square dancing, it burns about 280. Dance forms such as belly and salsa burn 400 plus calories per hour.

Apart from these health benefits, dancing is also considered an excellent way to add that extra cheer to your life, thereby making each day more fulfilling.

Life is full of emotions, and an exercise plan coupled with rhythmic movements such as dance is a great way to lift your emotions, bringing more joy and fulfillment to your life. Dance might just be the perfect aerobic exercise that can help you move according to your life’s changing emotions and rhythms.

Nowadays, a number of options are available to practice different types of dance. One can lean how to dance by taking a class locally at their gym or at a dance studio or perhaps on their own by purchasing a DVD on a particular style of dance. However you choose to approach the subject I strongly encourage you to get out there and dance.

Who Else Wants To Learn Ballroom Dancing?

Ballroom dancing is a very formal style of dancing that is used at formal events and in competitions all over the world. Each different type of ballroom dancing has numerous steps and motions that create a beautiful, fluid movement between the partners in the dance. Many individuals that are interested in ballroom dancing hire a professional dance instructor to teach them the steps of the dance in order to ensure that they are doing the dance properly.

There are several different styles of ballroom dancing that an individual may be interested in. The International Standard style of ballroom dancing includes dances such as the Waltz, the Tango, and the Fox Trot, while the International Latin style of ballroom dancing includes dances such as the Samba, the Rumba, and the Cha Cha. In America, there is also an American Smooth style and an American Rhythm style of ballroom dancing.

There are a number of other dances that are commonly classified as ballroom dancing, although they do not belong in the category using traditional classification factors. Many of these dances originated in the Americas and are not generally well known in the international community. Dances that tend to fall into this category include most American swing dances, the Salsa, the Merengue, and the Polka.

Most professional dance instructors will have the ability to teach the proper way to perform a number of these dances. The exact dances that each instructor is willing to teach will vary from instructor to instructor, as some will have more experience in a certain type of dance than others. Individuals may want to inquire which dances the professional dance instructor is willing to teach prior to scheduling a dance lesson in order to guarantee that they will be able to learn the dance that they desire.

Ballroom dancing is one of those items that take a few lessons to learn, but a lifetime to master. Many of the individuals that perform ballroom dancing on a competitive level have been dancing for years, often with the same partner so that they have the ability to communicate the movements and positions perfectly to each other. Individuals that would like to learn ballroom dancing for a less intense performance, such as a wedding reception, will still require multiple lessons to learn the timing and the movements of the dance.

One of the most important aspects of ballroom dancing is the appearance of the dance. Ballroom dancing is supposed to appear formal and classical, which means that the appearance of the individuals performing the dance needs to match the tone of the dance. Many individuals choose to wear traditional costumes of the mid-20th century, usually including a tuxedo and tails for the men and full, flowing colorful gowns for the women.

Over the years, the popularity of ballroom dancing has risen and fallen with the times. The allure and magic of ballroom dancing continues to survive in today’s modern age as the steps of the dances are relearned in each generation. As long as there are movies, music, and events to inspire the delicate movements of ballroom dancing, there will be individuals that are interested in learning the steps and the techniques.

Learning to Dance Ballroom Like the Stars

Learning to Dance Ballroom Like the Stars

Have you ever watched the show Dancing with the Stars on ABC and wished you could learn to dance just like they learned to dance? I understand completely as both my wife and I have also wondered and wished this same thing when we watched the show.

Being a man though that is not ordinary I suppose I will admit to not being ashamed to liking, ok let me be honest here, loving to be with out with my wife. Yes that means that being with your wife also can mean dancing and having a wonderful time not just being in a pub shooting pool or whatever else you like to do guys.

I realized that after watching the TV show Dancing with the Stars that is it possible to learn dancing in a better way then just going around trying to dance the way I danced in High School. It wasn’t sexy nor pretty those kind of movements, and now at my age it probably isn’t that good for me either. Laugh if you may!

Now that brings up another point, the topic of being good for ones health too. I have noticed that this Show Dancing with the Stars also benefits our fitness and body shape. The Stars seem to becoming more and more fit each and every week, their shapes and sizes changing so dramatically, so quickly as I sat there on the couch eating. So who really gave it any thought that dancing The Rhumba, The Samba, The Tango, The Jive, The Waltz, The Cha Cha or The Tango could make exercise such an enjoyable experience and with such huge benefits too. Well I certainly didn’t realize it but now I am reaping the benefits.

Guys, lets get back to us, can you see yourself on the dance floor, moving to the beats of Salsa, Samba, Waltz’s and even the Tango with other guys in the room looking at you with envy? That is something that can happen to you as it is happening for me as my wife and I playfully learn to dance the Salsa using the Let’s Dance Louis DVD Set. After we get this Salsa Dance completed we have 7 other dances to learn. I think we will try learning the Latin Dances first.

Lastly, there are more benefits to this learning to dance opportunity my wife and I have ventured onto and this is the best, absolutely the best thing that happens from ballroom dancing with my wife cheek to cheek. I am pretty sure you have figured it out already, and it is that our relationship has prospered, flourished, back to the point when our time spent together was filled with passion, excitement and laughter.

Now I think that this has been an excellent investment to my future life with my wife if not the best investment of my life. Thank you “Louis van Amstel” from “Louis Lets Dance”!

Love, Prosperity and Success to All!

Are You in the Mood to Dance?

Are You in the Mood to Dance?

In this chaotic and fast paced lifestyle that we all seem to live isn’t it about time that we create a space for ourselves to give more ‘me time’ and have more fun. What better way than learning to dance by exercising the body and calming our thoughts or more importantly to release the frantic ever active mind into the ever beating heart.

When we are healthy and radiating positive energy we literally attract a feeling of well-being and like a magnet draw pleasurable experiences into our lives. Conversely, if we are tired, stressed or feeling low in energy we may need to learn how to convert the negative energy into a blissful state and dance could be one of the ways to achieve this.

When you are dancing to enhance your mood it may help to visualise the seven colours of the chakras.

RED Passion

Visualise the colour red when dancing the Argentina Tango can help you to access the passion to give more energy and liveliness to this dance. When learning the technique coupled with the accentuated movements and maintaining the powerful posture. Tango is the uniquely intoxicating ‘forbidden dance’, a story of two people connecting passion and romance.

ORANGE Sensuality

Visualise the colour Orange when performing the Rumba can help with this slow, sensuous dance that has an almost teasing and rejecting quality between the two people involved. It has a rhythmical slow Latin beat with gyrating hip actions and dance expression that is more moody and has a serious quality.

YELLOW Confidence

Visualise the colour Yellow when dancing the Cha-Cha which is a happy, carefree dance expressing dynamic confidence and empowering everyone as they dance these steps. With the Cha-Cha’s forward and back movements depicting the essence of give and take between the couple.

GREEN Compassion

Visualise the colour Green when performing the Swing as it is a lively, energetic tempo with accentuated movements of the hips and thighs. Imagine the rhythm of the Swing keeping in unison with the deep resonating beat of your heart.

BLUE Communicative

Visualise the colour Blue when dancing the Foxtrot similar to the blue sky or blue water that ripples downstream and flows with the music. The seductive slow tempo encourages the releasing of control and the willingness to surrender and communicate your deepest emotions.

INDIGO Imagination

Visualise the colour Indigo when dancing the Samba as it is a lively rhythmical dance that requires light-footed, circular movements of the hips and shoulders as you match and mirror your partner. The vivacious pulsating beat of the Samba creates seductive and animated movements that almost appear animal like.

WHITE Elegance

Visualise the colour White when dancing the Waltz with extreme charm, poise and elegance as you imagine Swans floating across the water gracefully creating breathtaking spectacle majestically gliding across the dance floor with ease.

The Art of learning to dance is a step-by-step process of leader and follower that requires trust, respect and timing creating a musical symphony that expresses the spirit of the dance between two people as they move as one.

The freedom that the dance gives releases the body, mind and soul that captivates the imagination of the audience and I am truly hooked on learning to dance.

How to dance Samba

Samba Background:

Samba is a lively dance style, which originated from Brazil in late 19th century. It actually involves a set of dances, rather than a single dance, so no dance can be comparable with the original Brazilian Samba dance style. Modern Samba has been developed from an early Brazilian music called “Choro.” The ball room Samba was developed in 1956, since when, various forms of Samba have been developed. The important thing about Samba is that, the dance is done in triple time—meaning, three steps performed in two beats.

Samba Styles:

Samba no pe:

It is a solo dance, involving straight body, with only one knee bent at a time. The rhythm is 2/4, with a-one, and a-two, and back to one. Men dance with the whole foot on the ground, while women wearing heels, dance on their balls of the foot.

Samba de Gafieira:

This form of Samba is considered to be a combination of Waltz and Tango. The steps are done on a quick-quick-slow tempo. This style of Samba is present in dance academies all over the world.

Samba Pagode:

Pagoda originally means a celebration with lots of food, music and dance, and so, this style of Samba was originated in 1980s.

Samba Axe:

It is a very energetic style of Samba dance, which is usually performed as a solo dance. This style of Samba is based on proper choreographic movements.

Samba Reggae:

It is a second most popular Samba style dance in Brazil, mixed with reggae beats and drums.

Samba Rock:

It is a type of night club dance, with a mix variety of other Samba styles.

Samba de roda:

It is a traditional Brazilian dance, accompanied by singing and clapping.

Basic Dance Steps and Timing:

There are several movements in Samba, but the two movements are the basic ones—the Forward Basic Movement, and the Backward Basic Movement.

Combining these two basic steps, make the six steps of the first move—the Forward Basic step. If the man will move his left foot forward, then the woman will move her right foot backward and vise versa. In the Forward Basic Move, the man will perform Forward Basic Movement, followed by backward movement, and the woman will do the opposite. Let us make ourselves understand about these two basic steps.

Back Basic Movement:

Right, Place. Step slightly back, on the first beat of music. Toe first, slide right foot back and change weight on the right leg, not moving left leg.

Left, tap. Up and down. Move left foot back, tapping on inside ball of the foot, with up and down motions.

Forward Basic Movement:

This is the same pattern as above except for the change side that is, Left side to start with, repeating the above pattern.

Back spot movement:

This is similar to the basic movements except, for the forward or back, the tap occurs behind the foot that moves on the first beat.

So, all you have to learn is these two basic steps and you will master samba dance.

How to Dance Samba No Pe

There are many forms of samba danced in Brazil. The two leading samba types in Rio today are the street samba dance called samba no pe, which is a solo dance and samba gafieiro, which is a partner dance.

The conventional type of samba danced during the Rio carnival is samba no pe. But according to some samba dancers there is a slightly difference between samba no pe and the show dance used during the Rio carnival. Samba no pe is also often seen as the most original samba. But others may claim that there is no such thing as an original samba dance.

Samba no pe is done in a 2/4 rhythm where the dancer takes three steps to every bar. This could make the samba to feel like a 3/4 timed dance. Samba no pe could be danced either alone or in a group. The dance consists of one basic step. The basic step requires a straight body and a bending of one knee at a time.

In samba no pe men and women are dancing samba with different steps and emphasis on different things during the dance. The male samba dancers often do a lot of acrobatic tricks with their feet. It is said that a good samba dancer speaks with his feet.

The female dance can be characterized as quick symmetrical feet movement with each foot twisting on the heel. All the time the females samba dancers put emphasis on their femininity by using their hips and shoulders very much.

The male and female dancers can dance together but they do not touch each other. Often the men dance around the women including spins, hops and jumps. The dance has a high tempo and is a complex combination of the basic steps, different variation and improvisation.

The dance is often done unaccompanied and begins straight away when the samba music starts. The speed of the movements change with the tempo of the music, some samba dances are very fast and other samba dances move at a more regular pace.

The dance consists of jumps and turns. It is important that when you jump you should not jump too high. It’s not easy to pick up the samba dance the first time you try. You should not be disappointed if you don’t get the hang of it the first time. It’s important that you stop looking at you feet and that you hold the body straight and at the same time start to relax.

Robert L J Bloom is the author and can provide additional information about samba music and the samba dance steps.
